Description

Нам срочно нужно установить имя и фамилию одного человека, однако информации о нем практически нет, но все о нем слышали. Все, что мы знаем - его имя "взято из воздуха", он кумир президента Джона Ф. Кеннеди, а еще этого человека часто называют не именем, а цифрами. О ком идет речь?

Translation: "We urgently need to identify a person's name and surname. There is almost no information about them, but everyone has heard of them. All we know: their name is 'taken from the air', they are an idol of President John F. Kennedy, and this person is often called by numbers instead of their name. Who is this?" ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍

Analysis

The task is a riddle with 4 key clues:

Clue 1: "Name taken from the air"

  • The Russian idiom "взять из воздуха" means "to make up", "to borrow"
  • Indicates that the name was taken/borrowed from somewhere

Clue 2: "Idol of President JFK"

  • John F. Kennedy was a well-known fan of James Bond books
  • In 1961 he included "From Russia with Love" in his list of favorite books
  • This is a historically documented fact

Clue 3: "Called by numbers"

  • James Bond is called "007" - his agent number
  • This is the most famous example of a person called by numbers ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍

Clue 4: "No information, but everyone has heard of them"

  • A paradox: the name is known to everyone, but few know about the real person
  • Indicates that we're talking about a real person whose name became famous in a different context

Solution

Connecting the clues

All clues point to James Bond - but not the fictional spy, rather the real person:

James Bond (1900-1989) - American ornithologist, author of "Birds of the West Indies" (1936).

Ian Fleming, creator of the 007 character, lived in Jamaica and used Bond's book for birdwatching. When he needed a name for his spy, he chose "James Bond" as "brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and very masculine name". ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍

How the clues relate to the ornithologist:

ClueExplanation
"Name taken from the air"Fleming literally "took" the ornithologist's name for his character
"Idol of JFK"JFK was a fan of James Bond books (the character with this name)
"Called by numbers"The character with his name is known as "007"
"No information, but everyone has heard"Everyone knows the name, but few know about the real ornithologist

Interesting facts

  • Fleming later met the real James Bond and his wife
  • Fleming gave the ornithologist a copy of "You Only Live Twice" inscribed: "To the real James Bond from the thief of his identity"
  • The ornithologist's wife threatened to sue Fleming, but it ended amicably ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍
